Search and Rescue
Mission Challenges
  • Find and rescue lost hikers, skiers, and mountaineers, or those involved in aviation or marine accidents.
  • Actual position of person, aircraft, or vessel is unknown.
  • Timeliness of response is key. According to a 1979 study by the USAF:
    • 50% of air distress cases involve fatalities
    • 60% of all survivors of aircraft crashes are injured
    • 20% of injured survivors are still alive after 24 hours
    • Slim probability of finding an uninjured survivor alive after 72 hours
  • Time of notification and time of actual emergency not always the same
  • Operations often take place in treacherous weather conditions
