- Find and rescue lost hikers, skiers, and mountaineers, or those involved in aviation or marine accidents.
- Actual position of person, aircraft, or vessel is unknown.
- Timeliness of response is key. According to a 1979 study by the USAF:
- 50% of air distress cases involve fatalities
- 60% of all survivors of aircraft crashes are injured
- 20% of injured survivors are still alive after 24 hours
- Slim probability of finding an uninjured survivor alive after 72 hours
- Time of notification and time of actual emergency not always the same
- Operations often take place in treacherous weather conditions
